DNS Services

The Internet Domain Name System is used to reslove hostnames found in URLs, for example www.mydomain.com to the numeric IP addresses that the Internet uses internally. In order for your site to work a DNS server must be configured somewhere to resolve the domain name of your site to the IP address of our server that hosts your site. If you purchase your domain name thru us then all of this work is done automatically for you. If you already own your domain name you will have to perform certain steps in order to point your domain name to our servers.

In both cases you have basically two options: let our DNS servers handle your domain name or to use some other (or your own) DNS servers.

Using Our DNS Servers

This is the recommended option. If you already had a domain name when you signed up with us you must contact the company you purchased the name thru and ask them to set the "authoritative DNS servers" for your domain name to the name servers that we sent you when you purchased your hosting plan from us. In most cases you should be able to set those DNS servers yourself via a web-based interface provided by your registrar. Although only the domain owner can perform that task our customer support service will often be able to provide some advice on how to get this done.

Once you use our DNS servers as the authoritative servers for your domain name you will be able to manage your domain name and subdomain names using your Control Panel. We offer great features and flexibility that you can take advantage of. You can have multiple subdomain names, like download.yourdomain.com or us.yourdomain.com, uk.yourdomain.com, etc. You can have each subdomain pointing to a different subsite in your hosting account, or you can point subdomain names to arbitary IP addresses (not only to our servers). You can also configure your domain so that your mail is handled by your own mail server and not by our mail servers (which is the default).

Using Your Own DNS Servers

Using our DNS servers is the supported and recommended option but if you wish so you can use other name servers for your domain name. In this case some of the functionality of the Control Panel, e.g. the DNS Editor will no longer work and you will have to point and manage your domain and subdomain names yourself.

Domain Name Transfers

It is possible both to transfer your domain name from our registrar to another and vice versa. Please be advised that a transfer costs as much as a new registration and sometimes takes even more time but once a transfer succeeds your domain name will be renewed for another year. The advantages of transferring your existing name to our registrar is that we will be able to handle renewals for you. But you are not required to do the transfer. If you choose not to do it you will simply have to handle renewals yourself.

If you purchase your domain name thru us or transfer it to our registrar you will remain the owner of the name and will retain full control over it.
